Hayward Heat Wave Spurs Faster Wood Abatement and Rail Prep
Hayward city fire and community groups report the heat wave accelerated the wood abatement program by about two months, with 2,502 parcels identified for weed and rubbish removal. Fire Captain Arhontes said rail rights of way are ahead of schedule, saving roughly 20 fire calls. The committee endorsed city study on converting Hayward Bridge to a public venue and backed support for the revived Hayward Municipal Band and summer concert series at Memorial Park. A tree trash disposal drive in May 2021 moved 3,000 cubic yards of rubbish with Oaklands Scavenger Co and Oregon Sanitary District assistance.
