AP reports a head on collision near Appomattox Virginia on a Sunday outing killed eight people from two families. The Hensleys of Pamplin and the Whites of Farmville perished. three teenage survivors and several injured were treated, with police citing a passing attempt on a hill crest as the cause.
The weatherman expects another hot week with above normal temperatures through Friday. Tonight's expected lows range between AZ and 56.
Northern and Central California expect no rain with above normal temperatures and hot interior conditions. Bay Area shows fair skies with coastal fog and light wind. highs near 80s to 90s, inland hotter. Valleys from Sacramento to Salinas stay fair with mild temperature changes and modest westerly winds, coastal fog limited to nights and mornings. Overall, most of California remains sunny, with hot inland regions and persistent coastal fog in favored areas.
A 16 inch Transcontinental Pipeline Co line exploded near Laurel Mississippi injuring one person and damaging two homes. Flames rose high and ground was torn open while two other lines kept pumping eastward. Five injured residents were treated in hospital including J A Ezell, his wife and their son Steven.
Sacramento reports a five year study of long range state problems with 943000 set aside for interim committees. Hearings statewide will cover air pollution medical care and horse racing while experts and the public testify. Senate and Assembly panels will divide funds with hearings on lobbying reform prepaid hospital insurance and other topics to follow.

CLEAR Alaska AP Uncle Sam will focus his second ballistic Missile Early Warning System eye at the Soviet Union from this interior point. Alaska July 1 The Clear BMEWS station is the second warning site built by the United States to defend against a surprise missile attack from the Soviet Union. The Air Force said Sunday the first BMEWS site went into operation at Thule Greenland last fall. A third station is under construction at Englefield Moor God Yorkshire England and is scheduled to be operational by the end of 1962.
About 50 high school students take part in the 24th annual Boys State practical citizenship exercise in Sacramento. They elect state officials on Wednesday after noisy rallies and mayor selections from 21 cities earlier Sunday. A separate accident report notes 16 month old Dick Hyland died when a family garage vehicle backed into him.
Three people drowned within 40 miles of Sacramento over the weekend. Jerry Ray Gastone Jr aged four and Ant Och fell from a plastic surfboard into the American River at Sandy Beach in southern Sacramento County. Claude Alexander Simmons Jr, 36, of San Pablo, drowned Saturday while picnicking on the Sacramento River near Knights Landing. John G. Myrdal, 34, of North Hollywood, a civilian electronics technician, was found Sunday in a swimming pool at an apartment hotel in Yuba City.

In Bolzano Italy two German speaking residents were shot dead by soldiers guarding power plants as a semi curfew was challenged amid pro Austrian unrest. The killings followed a surge in dynamiting of electric installations after Italian Austrian talks failed to resolve the dispute over the former Austrian province. Austria seeks greater autonomy for Bolzano where Germans are in the majority and Italy opposes ceding the territory.
In Davison Township, Lewis South, 32, was seriously wounded Sunday night while working under his car. A jack slipped, releasing a .22 cartridge explosion that struck his abdomen, according to a friend.
