County Bail Plan Delayed On Manhattan Project
Alameda County Supervisors postponed action on the Manhattan Bail Project seeking to substitute personal recognizance for bond to aid those unable to afford bonds. A Ford Foundation grant would fund a county agency to study releasing some prisoners without posting bail, amid strong opposition from bail bondsmen and agencies. Proponents say phase one would apply to misdemeanors and avoid court interference, while critics warn of a new government agency and lack of consultation. The board will seek input from sheriff, police chiefs, and probation officials before resuming.
