Inflation and wages cited as Western policy challenge
Basel based Bank for International Settlements warns Western governments to curb rising wages to fight inflation. The 104 page annual report calls for stronger labor legislation and greater use of government influence, noting wage hikes reached 21 percent in Italy and about 6 percent in the United States. It warns wage growth undermines profits, investment, and future output, urging policy adaptability and controls on international trade and payments amid a persistent U.S. balance of payments deficit.

Rate hike deflates market
NEW YORK AP. Expectations that other major banks would raise their prime rates dragged the market lower. The Dow Jones industrial average fell to 920.85, while declines outnumbered advances on the NYSE. Brokers blamed the rate increase and anticipated higher rates by week end, though trading was slow with widespread selling pressure. Pfizer rose about 4 percent and Amgen edged higher among drug stocks.

Choosing opening leads in bridge amid bidding analysis
Alfred Sheinwold stresses that the best opening lead comes from visualizing declarer and dummy through bidding, not copying a book. In today’s hand West erred by a book lead, declarer made seven tricks, a 650 point tie for top in a tourney, and South’s spade bid suggested distribution. West could have improved by choosing a lead guided by bidding, not a scripted card. The Daily Question presents a hand where pass is best with 72 high cards points and a doubleton. The Pocket Guide to Bridge is offered for 50 cents via The Daily Review.
