Women Lead In Gardening By The Green Thumb Trend

A study of 11,000 gardening families across 50 states finds women now make up 44 percent of green thumbers, reversing a year and a half ago when men were 55 percent. Reasons include more women in part time work, automation reducing men's outdoor jobs, and gardening as budget support, exercise, and social activity. Vegetables are being grown by 33 million households, with 86 percent of home garden families growing produce, while 44 million households grow vegetables. Married gardeners are 2 percent, with 1 percent having two or more children and 34 percent with four or more. Gardeners are do it yourselfers, spending about an hour daily, sharing tools through neighborly lending to compensate for new gardeners not fully equipped.
