Pay hike plan approved faces veto risk in Congress
Washington. More than 2.6 million American workers could see a minimum wage rise to 2.20 an hour by July 1, 1974, if Congress passes the measure. The House approved the bill 287 to 130, sending it to the Senate where Labor Secretary Brennan was to testify. The White House indicated opposition to the 2.40 level proposal, but favored the 2.20 plan. The bill also raises farm wages to 2.20 over three years and extends coverage to domestic workers and many government employees. A rival Enenborn substitute fails 218 to 105. The measure keeps overtime for seasonal workers and excludes Panamanian workers in the Canal Zone.
