Two star performers of the Shipstad and Johnson Ice Follies of 1950 were killed when their automobile left the highway near Bend Oregon and struck rocks. A third cast member was injured. The victims were Jeanne Crystal and Charles Davidson. Nancy Meken sustained multiple fractures and was taken to St Charles hospital. The group had been traveling from Portland to San Francisco for a new engagement when the crash occurred. Police believe Davidson fell asleep at the wheel. no other vehicle was involved.
The Supreme Court, in a 6 to 1 decision, addressed a railroad car segregation issue under the Interstate Commerce Act. The ruling confirmed the act prohibits any undue preference or prejudice by a railroad toward or against any person, but did not settle the constitutionality of segregation itself. Justice Harold J. Burton delivered the opinion. Justice Tom C. Clark did not participate.
A new state CIO council formed by a California union approved a anti red constitution at its convention. Manuel Dias of Oakland was elected to lead, with John A. Despol and thirty directors from 21 unions. The group vows not to affiliate with or support extremist organizations or subversive groups, while the old charter was revoked as communist dominated. The conference also addressed university segregation cases and referred them to the Interstate Commerce Commission for further action.
