Teen Age Cop Killers Arraigned in Superior Court
Two youths James McKay 18 of Sacramento and Robert Sturm 19 of Orland were arraigned on murder indictments in Shasta County Superior Court for the killings of undersheriff Earl Sholes and deputy Dan Heryford. They confessed to overpowering and shooting the officers with the victims’ weapons after stealing Sholes car and fleeing toward the California Nevada border. They had been held at Folsom prison and were remanded to await attorney appointment. A state youth authority camp was involved in their earlier custody. A separate Berkeley earthquake report noted a small quake lasting about one minute near San Leandro.
