Alameda County coroner lists death of Jose Enriquez, 35, of 24186 Park St, as apparent self harm. Investigators say Enriquez was dead about two days before discovery in his garage with a hose from the exhaust, a tape recorder on the front seat, and he was separated from his wife.
Castro Valley housewife Mrs Frederick Popplewell, 27, shot Sunday by a sniper, is expected to be released from Oak Knoll Hospital. Spokesman says she is doing quite well after a bullet hit just below the right ear while riding with her husband and four children along Highway 50 near Vasco Road. A second bullet narrowly missed one child. Sheriff’s deputies investigate several “sting reads” in the shooting.
Dil lingham Construction Corp of San Francisco wins a 10.639 million contract from the California State Department of General Services to build an administration library dormitory structure at Hayward. Groundbreaking is set for two weeks away. The two story library with basement will serve about 11,300 students. The administration building will rise as a 32 story tower at one end of the library.
Livermore Ebernhardt Schwartz, a Livermore High School graduate and former foreign exchange student, was released by East German authorities after being imprisoned since 1964. The release was announced by Mr and Mrs Earl Using of 9982 Mines Road, who hosted Schwantz during 1950 80 school year. Schwantz, aged 29, had aided others in escaping via the Berlin Wall.
Mechanics at Greyhound Bus Lines authorized a strike threatening 23 000 Bay Area commuters and potentially disrupting operations in 41 Western states. Over 300 IAM Lodge 19 members voted Tuesday to strike after rejecting a three year contract offer with 67 cents hourly wage increases and other improvements. No walkout date was set.
Mina de Leon Dusheck, 42, wife of San Francisco newsman George Dusheck, was killed Tuesday when their car collided with a logging truck on the Coastal Highway L. Dusheck, a regular commentator on KCED's Newsroom, survived with minor injuries. Teuch driver Larry Carpenter of Navaren was treated and released from a hospital.
AP reports Soviet Bear bombers flew about 0 miles off Newfoundland as Canadian and American jets intercepted three approaches on May 4. Interceptors identified Bear four engine planes capable of carrying air-to-surface nukes. NORAD officials said no hostile intent observed. planes turned east after interception.
Richmond's new mayor, George Livingston, urged black and white cooperation to build a great city. Livingston, a city councilman since 1973, was selected unanimously after John H. Sheridan was deselected in last month's re election bid.

Rohr Corporation of Chula Vista California emerged as apparent low bidder for Bay Area Rapid Transit Districts first 250 cars. The bid totaled 59 094 967 with an alternate 62 525 327 for stainless steel. Bids from Pullman Standard and St Louis Car Division ranged up to 365 642 162.
Washington CPI Army reverses a tomb guard reassignment for Sgt Michael Sanders 22 of Lexington Kentucky citing asthma and hearing impairment. He will be sent to Vietnam where his condition can be treated and his duties should not worsen his hearing.
