A 60-year-old invalid in the Bronx rose from bed and wounded his landlord before engaging 50 police in a gun duel lasting over an hour. Rosario Virgadamo, a World War I veteran, was killed in his bedroom after police used tear gas and axes to gain entry. the landlord Philip Figario was shot in the shoulder.
Ten candidates for the first degree will receive initiations at the Hayward Council of the Knights of Columbus meeting at 1615 this evening at 8 p.m. in Dania Hall. Officers for the ensuing year will be nominated. John J. Banducci, Grand Knight, will preside.
Fire crews extinguished a shed and grass fire behind 128 Soto street Friday at 11 40 a m. The shed belonged to Nell M Simpson and the grass fire took about 40 minutes to control with $500 in damage. Officials cited an incinerator behind Gonsalves Top Shop as the probable fire source.

United Press reports sixty three thousand telephone workers threaten a strike against the Bell system in 13 western and midwestern states. About 51000 members of District 6 CIO Communications Workers of America are set to strike at midnight unless a wage settlement is reached with Southwestern Bell in St. Louis. A stoppage would affect Missouri Kansas Texas Oklahoma Arkansas and part of Illinois. District 8 in Denver predicts 12000 members will vote to strike against Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph serving Colorado Wyoming New Mexico Utah Idaho Arizona and western Texas.
Harold Teel supervisor of Hayward Area Recreation district will discuss local and district facilities when he speaks before Castro Valley Improvement Club at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Castro Valley school. He will answer recreation questions. Attorney Garner White will discuss an assembly bill affecting incorporation now before the state legislature. Fred Dyche serves as program chairman in place of Jerome Crawford vacationing in Hawaii.
Fire Chief Emile Saunders warned residents to clear dry grass around houses and out-buildings after three recent calls to grass fires over the weekend. Two of the incidents occurred at the same location. no damage was reported. Fires began Friday and Saturday in the Tennyson area.
Fire at the rear of the Salgardo Plumbing office 417 Belmar Street yesterday damaged a shed. Owner Earnest Salgardo could not estimate damages. Several water heaters inside were scorched. Defective wiring was suspected as the cause.
Qualifying play began at Brook Hollow Country Club for the 48th trans Mississippi Golf tournament. About 200 amateurs chased a 6400 yard par 70 layout with 64 players to reach match play starting Wednesday. Defending champ Jim English of Des Moines had a berth, while many stars were absent.
