Fair skies forecast across South County with highs near 205 degrees and nightly lows in the 40s. Westerly winds up to 20 mph expected today and tomorrow as the forecast extends through the period. More weather, page 25.
Winds gusting to 20 mph propelled a grass fire along Warm Springs Boulevard near Interstate 680. Fire crews from Fremont and Sunol battled the blaze for hours, damaging about 7 000 dollars in forage and fence posts. A home on Scott Creek Road was saved and a volunteer firefighter was airlifted after an injury.
California canneries resume full operation as 65,000 workers return following a five day strike by Teamsters Local 741 and Local 750. An agreement with California Processors Inc. ends the stoppage ahead of the peach, pear, and tomato harvest. Federal mediator W J Usery announced the pact after intensive all night talks. Prices and availability of canned fruits and vegetables are not immediately affected, officials say.
In South County and nearby markets shoppers did not rush to stockpile as beef pork eggs and other items faced rising costs. San Francisco stores reported some spikes with families loading up while local managers warned prices would rise but planned no rationing.
Princeton AP report shows President Nixon with 40 percent approval and 4 percent disapproval in a Gallup national survey, a drop of five points from two weeks earlier. The poll follows testimony by White House counsel John Dean and precedes appearances by former associates at Watergate hearings.
Paul Tindler, 31, lay injured on the Nimitz Freeway for seven minutes after a loss of control on his motorcycle early Sunday. A CHP car arrived, flare tent kept him warm, and a second motorist reported the hit run. A passing driver followed the perpetrator, leading to Hayward resident Jeannette Burton, 27034 Pensacola Way, who had a yellow sheet hidden under her car. The district attorney will decide charges. Tindler, of 2414 State Street, San Leandro, remained in critical condition at Highland Hospital.
Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, World War I ace and driving force behind Eastern Airlines, died in Zurich at age 82 from heart failure. He survived dogfights with the Red Baron, later led Eastern, and planned to be buried in Columbus, Ohio. His varied life included racing at Daytona Beach and service under General Pershing before earning his flying commission.
