Spider blamed for death of Oakland man
An automobile mechanic, Thomas Conger, 55, was bitten July 10 by a South American violin spider in the Northern Sierra foothills. He developed severe abdominal cramps, was treated at Kaiser Hospital, and died July 17 from a massive bacterial infection he and doctors linked to the venomous spider.
