Military reported the owner of a cliff identified 2nd Lt. Donald E. B. McIntyre as the pilot who rented a small private plane at 7 pm Monday before it crashed near Nayal avenues. McIntyre was listed AWOL in the morning report, with a home address provided for Melntyre.
San Lorenzo Village residents report a small silver plane with yellow wings buzzing over Hayward area, flying 1.75 to 100 feet above wires and over fields near A Le Christensen. Civil Aeronautic Administration says pilot could be cited for reckless flying. plane identified as Atwood Dusters company craft from Saane.
Reports indicate a man named McIntyre may have been visiting San Luis Obispo. He bailed from a plane over Washington Acres for unknown reasons, despite a safe landing being possible at Hayward airport. He was said to be an experienced pilot. Witnesses saw him jump, and the craft crashed minutes later into a vacant home under construction, causing about 1500 dollars in damage.
Fear of war shortages spurred a buying spree across many cities but nationwide shoppers largely remained calm after the Korean War breakout. Dealers reported spikes in purchases of tires sugar and soft goods while some areas faced continued panic fueled by false rumors. In Atlanta retailers noted hesitancy in trading in old tires and demand for extra sets for cars, as Alabama appliance dealers reported similar jitters.
The Eden hospital district board may call a general election for three board seats and ask to consolidate with the November 7 general election. Attorney Georg Philips notes possible separate nominations for each of the three seats. Last day to file papers is September 2, with talks of vacancies and doctor backing for seats.
A 14 year old girl, reported missing for the second time in three weeks, was found asleep in a Jayward Police patrol car in front of City Hall. She told officers she had entered the car during the night seeking safety from the cold. She was taken to the sheriff’s office for temporary care as authorities investigate her home life.
Bakersfield Cal morning paper the Bakersfield Press announces today it will be the last issue. Publisher Hugh Sill cites overheads exceeding income as the reason for suspension with no immediate sale plans for equipment. The paper had a 16000 circulation after starting in February.
Castro Valley Chamber of Commerce schedules an open meeting for July 27 at Castro Valley School to discuss building a community swimming pool. George Phillips notes Martinez pool as a model for a 8 000 population area while Castro Valley, with about 10 000 residents, weighs costs and funding options from Hayward district, school district, and local land donations.
Washington reports Rep. Havenner and fellow California congressmen press the Reber plan to dam sections of San Francisco Bay. They seek White House talks with President Truman to push fast action, seeing the plan as quick evacuation protection, water supply benefits, and a new $2 land route, potentially replacing a second bay bridge. The plan would shield the delta from saltwater intrusion and create a freshwater lake behind Richmond.
In Chicago train service resumed on four western railways after the AFL Switchmen’s union called off a 12 day walkout. The Buckeye system remains strike bound though relieving crews begin assembling cars and preparing to restore operations gradually. Rock Island continues to strike over a 40 hour week with no pay cut amid other lines restoring service. President Truman warned of drastic action to ensure wheat and livestock shipping.
Western Pacific resumed operations after the AFL strike with shunting of freight cars and plan to roll trains once tonnage is assembled. Assistant superintendent W M Foster said freight operations would return gradually at terminals and passenger service would restart from Salt Lake City to San Francisco, with crews recalled first and office staff back by Monday.
Rev. John Joseph Mitty archbishop of San Francisco heads 200 Holy Year pilgrims aboard the Atlantic as part of 1070 passengers. They sail to Rome for a papal audience between July 17 and 21 and plan to return by late August. Included are Rev. Hugh A. Donohue Rev. Walter J. Tapee and Rev. Thaddius Tillman.
The Korean front sees a stalled Communist push as American troops dig in along the river defenses near Taejon. Air power hits key North Korean targets including oil refineries and rail yards as U S and ally forces adjust positions. Casualties and captures are reported with ongoing high tension as ground and air operations continue.
Bulletin from Lake Success New York reports the United Nations Security Council authorized the United States to designate General Douglas MacArthur as supreme commander of Allied forces. The decision signals a pivotal strategic leadership role in global military coordination during the ongoing conflict.
Sacramento AP report says California selective service boards must resume classifying potential draftees as 1-A to build a large pool of men. State director Kenneth H. Leitch notes about 115,000 cases will be reviewed to see who now has deferment qualifications. He cautions most will not be deferred, calling the order precautionary while Truman has indicated no current plan to draft reserves or National Guard.
Military dignitaries and local officials will dedicate Air National Guard facilities at Hayward airport this Sunday with an open house from 2:30 to 4:30. Entrance is on Russell City road. About 50 guardsmen are on permanent duty with a $15 000 monthly payroll. plans call to double the permanent staff to 51 officers and 304 enlisted, plus part time guardsmen. The unit includes the 184th Fighter Squadron the 194th Utility Flight the 194th Weather Station and Detachment A of the 244th Air Service Group all part of the local air station.
President Truman directed the armed services to raise strength by at least 300000 men and to use the draft if needed to meet the Korea situation. The defense department hoped voluntary enlistment and reserve returns would suffice, but draft machinery was activated with emphasis on calling men aged 19 to 25.
