On Independence Day Hayward celebrants lined up for a Fourth of July parade in downtown, recreating 1776 flair as residents join the pageant. Three year old Glen Treverton of Newark bought a bicentennial flag to wave in honor of the nation's birthday.
Americans celebrate a bicentennial Fourth of July with gala events across the United States. President Ford will visit Baltimore for a Fort McHenry bombardment reenactment while safety officials warn of traffic fatalities and injuries during the 54 hour holiday period.
President Ford's price monitor persuaded three of four major aluminum producers to delay planned price increases for 30 days, delaying costs for consumers. Alcoa Reynolds Kaiser and Alcan agreed, while the fourth firm had not officially confirmed. Hearings are set for July 22 to review pricing practices.

Union City faces the biggest tax increase in Alameda County as new assessment values show a 11.87 percent rise in Union City, with nearby South County cities San Leandro Hayward Newark and Fremont also posting double digit gains. Countywide average is 10.197 percent with Albany Emeryville and Piedmont among higher-reason increases.
