The government reported June figures show unemployment at 8.6 percent, down from 9.2 percent in May due to a statistical quirk rather than an improved economy. Wholesale prices slipped slightly mainly from lower food costs, while industrial commodity prices rose. The jobless rate could be higher if those not actively seeking work were counted.
Fremont board of education weighed a $1.7 million main building reconstruction and a $2.2 million refurbish plan for Washington High School. Trustees considered bankruptcy risks and budget taps as enrollment remains far below capacity, with calls to examine shutting the oldest Fremont high school.
Alby Castro a 54 year old former city council candidate and retired Teamster of 72 Barnes Court was arrested on three counts of receiving stolen property in what investigators call a professional fencing operation. Arrest followed an Alaneda County Sheriff's Department probe after an informant who sold stolen meat and liquor to Castro led deputies to his home. Raids found no listed stolen items and Castro denied the charges. He is to be arraigned Monday.

The Los Angeles Times reports a three month investigation alleging that Mervyn M. Dymally drew a $1000 monthly salary from a Ford Foundation grant and misused funds from a nonprofit Urban Affairs Institute created to aid minority youth. The abuses occurred 1968 to 1973 with $900,000 in Ford Foundation funds. Dymally allegedly set up a job training project funding relatives and staff, and family members and aides received scholarships and grants from the institute.
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission committee urges a full environmental impact report for widening B Street and Kelly Street in Hayward. The decision could affect a federal grant of up to millions and may revive a court case by Friends of B Street, with next hearings set for July 28.
Harold Crew longtime Bayfair general manager died in Seattle at 4 20 a m while visiting relatives. He retired March 1 after nine years as GM and had served as a consultant since. He previously held roles with Key System Transit and City of Oakland and was active in several civic groups. He is survived by wife Winifred daughter Mrs Robert Simas two grandchildren and two brothers. Funeral rites planned Monday at Santos Robinson Chapel San Leandro with burial in Mountain View Cemetery.
