Hayward Welcomes Heavyweight Champion Foreman Home
The city of Hayward held a hero’s homecoming for heavyweight champion George Foreman at the Civic Center after a victory in Kingston. Fire Chief Jimenez led the parade from Studio Hayward, with about 300 locals, mostly students, present. Mayor Lan Howell presented Foreman with keys to the city, honors, and plaques from multiple groups while Foreman promised autographing for all, touring schools and the YMCA.

Four Canadian Women Rescued From Open Drawbridge Edge
A borrowed car carrying four elderly Canadian women became stranded on the open edge of a drawbridge over Talca Ciega Bay. Madeleine Dow, 74, Norah Bennett, 73, Margaret Siype, 72, and Olive M. Bomb, 78, were held above water for over an hour after the undercarriage snagged on the bridge edge. Clayton Gignac, the nearby sailboat captain, alerted others as the gates failed to descend.

Big layoff announced at Rad Lab in Livermore
Rad Lab officials announced a major cutback reducing the 5400 workforce by about 275 jobs. The lab plans to shift away from nuclear projects toward other work and may hire and fire personnel concurrently. A number of employees will receive layoff notices in March and exits effective in May.
