Family grocer absorbs Universal loss to help customers

El Cajon based Kaelin family runs Valley Center Market and has repaid about 90,000 to customers who bought Universal Money Orders before the company filed for bankruptcy. John Kaelin estimates losses could exceed 100,000 as they refund with reissued American Express money orders. He notes some customers cried with relief and others reacted with anger before understanding the effort. The state banking department says the money orders may recover 5 to 60 cents on the dollar once bankruptcy is settled.

A petition signed by many urged keeping the school open, noting it offers a central play area and potential savings of 38,000, though three bus routes costing about 18,000 would shift students to Hesperian School. Evelyn Sater recalled El Portal’s 1953 opening and urged the board to consider hill-area residents’ push to keep the local school.
