SAN FRANCISCO A man and a woman, likely forced to flip from the bridge, were pulled from a girder on the Golden Gate Bridge late last night and held for questioning. The man carried a driver’s license issued to Carl W. Davis of San Francisco and the woman had a letter addressed to Mrs Adelaide Rowe. Two motorists, Donald Garrett and his brother Gerald of Marin City, reported seeing them run from a car. The Garels pulled the couple back from the rail with others assisting, including Patrolman Clem Collins.
French Foreign Minister Georges Bidault opened the Big Four conference in Berlin urging that defense cannot be negotiated away and stressing that Germany’s fate lies with the West. He rejected any trade linking German security to broader concessions, and urged a durable agreement among the four powers to curb German menace and avoid using Germany for internal subversion. The session began cordially as ministers met.
In a dramatic African expedition report from Kampala, Ernest Hemingway and his wife Mary Welsh survived two jungle plane crashes while traveling near Murchison Falls and Lake Albert.
