Russel City residents faced a fatal morning as a fire swept through the Reynoles home at 29093 Monroe Street. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours, the cause unknown, while owner Jack Reynoles lamented inability to save the house despite using a garden hose and 500 gallons of water.
Bill Walters of the Alameda County Fire Patrol said at noon today that bedding and mattresses have been secured but four or five cots are needed for the agitated Reynolds family. Anyone willing to contribute a cot should bring it to the Fairview Fire Station for delivery.
A Russell City garage owner lost a five truck fleet after thieves removed them from the property while a pusbane worked to save the home. Alameda County fire patrol chief Bill Wolters praised Reynolds for years of service, noting there was little hope of recovery and residents expressed unity and sorrow.
At the United Nations the Soviet Union vetoed a Western backed plan on the River Jordan hydroelectric project between Israel and Jordan. The veto halted a resolution that would have referred the dispute to UN staff for a 90 day report, signaling a dead end in efforts to ease tensions ahead of next week’s Berlin talks. Western allies argued the project gave Israel military and economic gains, while the Soviet bloc sought Arab support in the Middle East.

In Providence, Rhode Island, thousands of signs urged patrons to switch from high priced calice to tea.
A court of inquiry will investigate whether Co. HE Schwable should be punished for falsely confessing United States used germ warfare in Korea. Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr., Marine Corps commandant, announced the court will include a Medal of Honor holder and a medical authority as experts.
Molotov arrives in Berlin for the Big Four talks and presses to admit Communist China into discussions on world affairs. Western Allies indicate they will focus on a German peace treaty and Austrian independence, while Molotov claims Russia seeks peace on its terms as foreign ministers plan strategy for Monday conference.
Unidentified planes breached the truce line and flew as far south as Seoul triggering a red air alert and sirens. Allied jets pursued but no intercept occurred as observers tracked the incursion and returned to the north.
A former Korean War prisoner from Cracker's Neck Virginia is under Army custody at Waller Reed hospital as charges for court martial potential arise. The 2d year man allegedly dealt with the enemy seeking favorable treatment, risking detriment to Yellow prisoners. He had denounced the Reds last October and asked to be returned to the United States. He spent months with his family on their two acre farm in Virginia.
A San Jose blaze killed two occupants and burned another as a duplex apartment collapsed. Three women from a neighboring unit escaped through a window. Irene Diedre, 25, reported waking to a blast at about 3 30 am and helped Kavesa Fiterer, 24, and Artis Stayion, 22, flee the room. The unidentified man died with a partner whose identity could not be confirmed. Police reported the three women suffered bruises while escaping.
