Castro Valley Legion Charter Granted Amid Ceremony Night
Castro Valley Legion Post 649 received its charter as the 32nd post in the tenth district of California during colorful ceremonies at Castro Valley Elementary School. Commander Garry Aflen accepted the charter from William Johnston of San Francisco as 200-plus Legionnaires and auxiliaries gathered from Alameda and nearby communities. The event included initiation of 20 charter members and installation of 1951 officers led by Commander Allen, with Voiture 257 assisting, and officers and staff named such as John Murphy, Art Daniels, Henry Wright, and Lloyd Kenyon. The district meeting led by Phil Holzknecht followed the ceremony.

Panic in New Guinea as Mount Lamington threat rises
Port Moresby dispatch reports panic as natives flee toward the coast after a volcanologist warned Mount Lamington may erupt again. Evacuations urged for Tufi area due to tremor risk as the northern face of the volcano was blown off and about 20 villages were destroyed or damaged.
