President Eisenhower accused Democratic critics of budgetary schizophrenia over his 77 billion dollar balanced budget. He rejected turning the budget into a political football and warned against partisan attacks.
A $225 000 damage claim for false arrest has been filed against San Leandro and four officers by a man freed last week of charges. The suit alleges arrest, assault and injuries, with his wife claiming she was held for hours in jail without charges. Defendants include City Manager Wesley McClure Police Chief Artel J Lamourex and Officers John Caldwell and Charles Kane. The Alameda attorney Harold Howe represents the defendants.
In Buffalo a motorist John J. Baron faced charges including resisting arrest and disturbing the peace after colliding with a patrol car. Co-defendant Fischer attacked an officer with a flashlight and fled, later cleared of related counts as a jury trial proceeded under Judge Foley.
In Sacramento a Senate bill would create a cancer advisory council and empower the Dept of Public Health to test treatments and halt quacks. It would ban treating cancer without department approval and allow cease and desist orders and court injunctions after hearings.
