A second floor storage room where paint cans were stored during renovations is believed to be the origin of a 50,000 dollar fire at the Green Shutter hotel last night. Clouds of smoke rose from the roof as firefighters battled flames. Howard Gregerson alerted the alarm and spoke with Fire Chief Louis Silver.
In a Manchester New Hampshire trial, defense attorney Louis By Wyman questioned Dr Matolda L Loverud about a cancer patient, Mrs Abbie C Borrota, who died after air was injected into her veins. The defense contends she was already dead, while prosecutors cite statements by Dr Sander and others that a fatal air dose was given at the husband’s urging.
Castro Valley businessmen plan a meeting at Castro Valley School today at 1 pm to discuss securing sidewalk installations on the boulevard. Arnold Anderson chairs the sidewalk means committee of the Castro Valley Businessmen's Association. Carl Nunes announces the opening of Carl Nunes Motor Co at 20510 Mastlath Street Hayward and seeks used cars 1919 to 1942 for fairest deals.
Speakers Tomorrow describes continued push for new industries in Eden township sponsored by the Southern Alameda County Real Estate board. In Hayward, Philip Brack of Anglo California National Bank will discuss the West Coast economy and industrial development prospects for Southern Alameda county, with James Stark introducing him. Breck will also speak and, with prior Chamber of Commerce work, has studied community development since UC 1933. A Navy reserve officer, he aided industrial plant surveys for Navy security. W Frieberg of American Trust will discuss the Industrial Future of Southern Alameda county at San Leandro City Hall today at 5 p.m.
Donna Dee Dixon leads in the Hayward Water and Flower Festival queen voting with 11,650 votes, per official results reviewed by William C. Wilken, Hayward development commission chair. Nancy Schwarz holds second with 449 votes, and Ann Ferenz trails with 190 votes. results reflect ballots from downtown stores counted under Girl Scouts supervision.

More than fifty guests fled the Green Shutter hotel on Main street as a blaze originating in a storage room spread through the building. Damage is estimated between 50 000 and 75 000 dollars, with smoke filling the second floor and most rooms on the east side. Fire crews arrived within minutes, and patrons were evacuated under police direction as water damage affected portions of surrounding shops.
Joseph Blanco tipped off sheriff deputies about an attempted theft at 18599 East 14th Street Lewelling Market. Edward Crater 28 and Ronald Crater 22 both from Los Angeles were captured with the safe containing over 2000 dollars. Authorities say they intended to haul the safe to a nearby car for a later robbery. Charles Gebo, 44, market owner, identified the scene and investigators continued the probe.
Hayward fire department responded to a morning blaze at Henry's Toy and Furniture, 938 5 Street. A gas heater caused smoke to fill the building, enveloping owner Henry A. Gall who reported rapid department action and minimal water damage, with stock damaged by smoke and burnt paint particles.
Store and Hayward Feed and Fuel owner Herman Eggert and his brother Henry run the hotel building which housed a hall of rooms and three occupied apartments. J. J. Hooper, former Daily Review publisher, occupied the severely damaged room. Hooper had survived a prior fire in the same area that destroyed two stores and a rooming house, with outside walls scorched as he left. Lions club members rushed to save belongings as the banquet room doors opened and staff recovered items including a board plaque and club badges.
