POW Welcomes Home Father As Family Reunites

In San Francisco and Oakland scenes, Returning POW Albert Carlson and Marine Lt Col Harlan Chapman arrive to joyful welcomes. Carlson, wounded in the April 1972 Loc Ninh battle, departs Travis Air Force Base for home with his wife and son Eric. Bodies of headless women found near Castro Valley area

Five headless young women were found about 14 miles from Interstate 580 on Eden Canyon Road, east of Castro Valley. Bodies lay 20 feet below an embankment, some with bound hands, one without hands. Coroner to perform autopsy. identities not yet established. Authorities noted prior similar cases in Santa Cruz area and ongoing investigations by multiple agencies.

20 to be freed Saturday POWs head home

United Press International reports the largest group yet of American prisoners of war will depart Clark Air Base for the United States, with 60 POWs on three flights expected to land at Travis Air Force Base. The release schedule includes two more prisoners later, pending Pentagon approval.

The Army Court of Military Review refused today in Washington to overturn Lt. William Calley Jr.’s murder conviction or reduce his 20 year sentence for the killings of 22 civilians at My Lai in South Vietnam five years ago.

Unarmed U.S. Chinook Shot Down Near An Loc Vietnam

An unarmed U.S. CH 7 Chinook helicopter on loan to the Joint Military Commission was shot down near An Loc, seven miles south, bursting into flames. All five crew members were injured, two seriously. The craft ferried material for field headquarters under constraint at An Loc, sixty miles north of Saigon, and reportedly took hits from machine gun fire.

Court orders desegregation actions in 16 states

A federal judge ordered HEW to begin desegregation proceedings against public school systems in 10 states and parts of six others. Judge John H. Six Shootings Tie to San Francisco Priest Killing

Herbert W. Mullin, 25, arraigned in a Santa Cruz County court on charges of shooting six people with a .22 rifle and stabbing Rev. Henri Tomei inside a confessional at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Investigators say Mullin, described by friends as having “freaked out on acid,” was involved in the grim spree linked to past disturbances in the Haight Ashbury district and the community nine miles south of San Francisco.
