U S charges at Paris talks Hanoi uses POWs as pawns

UPI report says North Vietnam refuses serious talks and aims to use American POWs as bargaining pawns for a political settlement. Habib urged release of prisoners before any overall settlement, while Hanoi accused Washington of blocking talks and delaying peace.

Billionaire Perot Still Aims to Deliver POW Gifts by Year End

Texas billionaire H Ross Perot hopes to charter gifts to U S prisoners in North Vietnam despite Hanoi deadlines. He flew from Anchorage to Denmark with 26 tons of medical supplies clothing and food repackaged into 1500 packages by over 1000 volunteers. Perot plans to press Hanoi to deliver via Soviet authorities and to Moscow if permission is granted.

Transfer for Anti-Agnew Remarks Sparks Army Move

In Saigon US Air Force newsman Sgt. Hugh Morgan 24 from Rockville Maryland was removed from radio news duties and reassigned as a TV cameraman in Da Nang after on air remarks about Vice President Spiro Agnew. Lt Col James Adams said Morgan editorialized during a commentary referencing Eric Severeid and President Nixon. Morgan called the transfer surprising and denied harboring ill will toward Agnew.

Viet Cong attack during cease fire near Saigon

At least one American soldier was killed and several wounded by a Viet Cong mortar attack as the New Year cease-fire began. South Vietnamese forces reported additional wounded in four other Viet Cong rocket and mortar strikes in the first 14 hours of the 72 hour truce. Troop actions continued with aerial bombings and recon patrols, while both sides accused the other of violations amid the holiday cease-fire.

Court orders Army to bring soldier home from Vietnam

A federal 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Army Pvt. Richard Beaty of Porterville California must be returned home and discharged. Beaty, married with two children, was inducted in 1967 and sent to Germany, later volunteering for Vietnam. He spent 69 days at home awaiting orders before being recalled, a move the court deemed unconstitutional.

Beaty’s Family Says Soldier Told To Keep Waiting

Beaty’s mother reported contacting the Pentagon twice and being told her son should keep waiting. In March 1886 Beaty suffered an auto crash. Police checked Ft. Lewis and found he was not AWOL. After his two year term ended in February 1969 he made no contact with Army officials and they never contacted him.

Lt. Gen. William R. Peers, head of the Army inquiry into a My Lai coverup, opened on scene work at U.S. military headquarters in Saigon. He arrived with a five man team and planned a 10 day to two week stay, reviewing records and hearing an unnamed witness about the March 16, 1968 village killings.

California Gets Navy Missile Frigate Name

The Navy said USS California will be the name for a nuclear powered guided missile frigate. Keel laying ceremony will occur at Newport News, Virginia on January 23. The name continues a historic link to the battleship name California once sunk at Pearl Harbor and later pressed into service in World War II.
