Nixon to Meet Brandt at Florida White House

President Nixon planned five hours of talks with West German Chancellor Willy Brandt at the Florida White House. Brandt arrives Tuesday for a five day summit to discuss European issues and Nixon’s upcoming Peking and Moscow trips, focusing on Brandt’s ostpolitik and reducing tensions with the East.

Hijack attempt fails on S F bound plane in Salt Lake

A 24 year old Donald L Coleman of Downers Grove Illinois armed with a plastic gun replica and a hunting knife tried to hijack American Airlines Flight 47 from Chicago to San Francisco over Wyoming. He was overpowered by two crew members and two passengers before the plane landed in Salt Lake City. No one was hurt. FBI said the captain landed by his own action and the hijacker never reached the cabin. Coleman will be charged with air piracy.

U S jets resume heavy North Vietnam bombing campaign

In a second straight day of air strikes, U S fighter bombers pounded military targets in North Vietnam, with reports claiming hundreds of planes hit hospitals and dense population areas. Officials said the raids aimed at Mig airfields, SAM sites, depots and artillery, as Hanoi accused the United States of grave war acts.

Hayward WWI hero Allison W. Reid dies at 77

Allison William Reid of Hayward, decorated WWI veteran and longtime Hunts Wesson Foods employee, died on Christmas Day aged 77. A San Leandro native and 1918 Distinguished Service Cross recipient, he also held the Croix de Guerre and Legion of Valor. Survived by daughter Beverly Dean Fernandez and other relatives. formerly of 18 Laurel, Hayward.

Edwards joins disputed illegal garbage rate hike case

Travis AFB drug protest ends barricade at hospital

Eighteen soldiers and four civilian sympathizers barricaded a seventh floor ward at Travis Air Force Hospital to protest military drug rehabilitation.
