Hoover praises Hungarian refugees as nation’s base
Ex President Herbert Hoover called Hungarian refugees arriving in the United States the material out of which the country was built. He told reporters at a conference with Vice President Nixon that refugees of this quality can filter into the U S without danger. Hoover and Nixon met at Hoover’s Waldorf Towers apartment for about 30 minutes as Nixon prepared to visit Camp Kilmer New Jersey to review refugee handling. Nixon said Hoover was helpful and the former president is the world’s greatest expert on refugees. He praised Eisenhower for sending Nixon to Hungary for an on the spot inspection, saying it added to the excellence of the job.
