Judge orders release of surplus food to Stanislaus County

U S Department of Agriculture must release 2000 tons of surplus food from a Sacramento warehouse for distribution to thousands of hungry residents in Stanislaus County. The order covers turkeys, meat, milk, peanut butter, cheese, butter and flour while critics cite the local welfare program and high food stamp ineligibility.

Official's rehiring bid rejected in California case

A former State Public Utilities commissioner sought reinstatement to his deputy attorney general post under state law but was denied by Superior Court Judge Charles S. Peery. The judge ruled Bennett had been away too long to qualify for mandatory reinstatement, having left civil service in 1959 and remained out for about ten years.

Unruh to select campaign group in San Francisco

UPI reports Assembly Minority Leader Unruh to name committee members this week for his Democratic gubernatorial bid in California. The San Francisco gathering follows a prior Bay Area meeting with about 100 delegates and unions. Four Democratic congressmen from California have endorsed Unruh, including Don Edwards, Jerome Waldie, Thomas Rees, and Charles Wilson.

Police offer rides to drinkers in Davis drive home plan

The 28 member Davis Police Force volunteers to drive home anyone who drank too much during Christmas or New Year festivities to keep drunk drivers off the road. Callers remain anonymous and no records or arrests would be kept.

Los Angeles County population reached nearly 7.2 million, a rise of about 44,000 in the first nine months of the year, with city population approaching 2.9 million after a yearlong gain. Regional Planning Commission released the figures on Monday.

Scientific panel urges drastic pesticide cuts worldwide

A government backed panel warned pesticides may impair photosynthesis and reduce oxygen production. It cited evidence that tiny DDT concentrations lower phytoplankton activity and notes widespread human exposure. The commission calls for drastic reduction and more studies, with HEW Secretary Finch moving to limit DDT use.

Captain Held in Bomb Plot Trial in Bracknell

In Bracknell England UPI reports eight retired British army captains including Captain Trevor C Williams 40 were charged at Magistrates Court with plotting to bomb an American passenger jet for 72000. Williams held for a week without bail while prosecutors said he possessed 11 12 pounds of plastic gelignite and a timing device for an awful purpose. He allegedly received the device abroad and sought 30000 pounds for destroying the plane. The charge carries up to 14 years in jail.

Washington AP top Nixon administration officials back the South in arguing federal law underreacts to northern and western school segregation.
