A four alarm blaze in downtown San Francisco early today left about 100 residents homeless. Firemen fought flames from 4:33 a.m. with 200 firefighters and 44 units. the roof collapsed and interior damage was extensive. No serious injuries were reported and Red Cross aid was arranged for evacuees.
Bandits robbed the Hyatt Cinema in Burlingame over the weekend, taking about 2500 dollars. Theater manager Carroll Gudmandson was accosted as he left, forced to open the safe at gunpoint, and cuffed to a railing before the men fled. Police received an anonymous tip nearly seven hours later and released the manager.
San Francisco police charged Donald Feller, 45, with assault to commit murder after a weekend party shooting. Authorities say he carried a shotgun rifle combination and a revolver, fired at two youths, and struck Louis J. Munoz, 20, in the right knee.
A man fired three shotgun blasts from a speeding car injuring four striking hospital workers near Kaiser Hospital in Walnut Creek. Victims include William Price Avery Carter two other pickets Mrs Exie Williams and George Thompson. Union officials seek police protection as detectives hunt the gunman amid ongoing contract deadlock with Local 250 Hospital Workers Union.
Police confirm the gunman who killed a pedestrian and wounded a motorist on Mission Street last Thursday is 26 year old John AW Price. Fingerprints match and investigators suspect a theft at a savings and loan for 435 dollars about an hour earlier.
Hamilton Air Force Base reports pilot Lednard Johnson of San Rafael is in good condition afterhis single engine plane ditched in San Francisco Bay three miles from Hamilton Field. He was rescued by a fishing boat following an attempt to reach the base on Sunday.
The body of a man tentatively identified as John Charles Bergman of San Francisco was found near Sunrise Mountain by three youths. Deputies said Bergman appeared to have broken an ankle, unable to descend, and died from exposure on the east Las Vegas peak.
RANTA CRUZ AP The body of a 43 year old woman identified as Jean Matthews was found at a 35 foot cliff. A second body, about 20, was found in surf and may take time to identify due to decomposition. Police linked both to a recent missing persons case, with two teens Elaine Davis and Leana Roberts reported kidnapped earlier in December.
Bob Hope headlined a two hour Christmas show for 13 000 U S troops at Lai Khe base north of Saigon with astronaut Neil Armstrong making a surprise appearance. The cast included Connie Stevens and The Cold Diggers. Armstron g fielded questions while Hope joked about the moon landing and Viet Cong rockets were found nearby. Peace signs flashed as GIs waited since Sunday to see the event.
Saigon Senator Tran Van Don said on Sunday that a majority in South Vietnam backs neither the Viet Cong nor the Saigon Government. In a Me Kong Delta tour he described the population as a floating mass, estimating about 60 percent in a third force, with 2 percent for the VC and a smaller share for Thieu’s government. He noted they avoid government tasks but do not support the VC, citing the Tel attack of 1968 as an example.
Allied intelligence officials said the Viet Cong will likely break their Christmas standdown with scattered attacks near Saigon. Reports note sub regional division-sized actions are possible while U.S. forces face heavy raids along the Cambodia border. The war’s toll rises as helicopter losses reach 1,432 and troop withdrawals reduce numbers in Vietnam.
An Air Vietnam DC-4 skidded off a Nha Trang base runway and plowed into a slum and a school, killing 30 initially and likely rising as rescuers search rubble. Of the dead, 21 were on the ground and nine aboard, with about a dozen schoolchildren among the victims. The passenger list showed no Americans, with Indians and Vietnamese among the others.
In Saigon the lower house and Senate debate Thieu's alleged plot to target three deputies. A National Assembly majority signs a resolution accusing the plot of dividing the government and harming unity. About 1,500 protesters invade the Assembly compound. 500 break into the chamber, assault desks, and chant. Three lawmakers named as targets are Pham The True Tran Ngoc Chau and Huynh Van Tu. Thieu warned in a December speech that ousters could trigger action from people and the armed forces.
Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker delivered a Christmas message to U S military and civilian personnel in Vietnam emphasizing that their efforts contribute to mankind's freedom everywhere. The four page document, bearing the U S seal, noted progress in 1969 but stressed much remains to be done and called for responsible use of power to promote a peaceful world.
