Nightlong San Francisco airport hijack ends with Fremont man safe

Richard Funk, 33, a United Airlines airframe maintenance supervisor from Fremont, was briefly knifed but unharmed after a mentally troubled mechanic seized a grounded DC-8 at San Francisco International Airport. The hijacker, Pat J. Hinnant, a United employee on medical leave, released Funk and surrendered after authorities refused his demands. Funk’s family, including wife Patricia and three children, waited through the night as airport staff and Latzinger, a co-worker and friend, coordinated updates.

Tanker Argo Merchant spills 7.8 million gallons off Nantucket

State officials said about 151000 California workers will become eligible next month for disability benefits tied to normal pregnancies.
