President Truman signed a bill extending federal rent controls with an optional six month extension for local communities. The compromise measure, passed by both houses, aims to give the 82nd Congress time to review the situation when it convenes next year. Local authorities may extend controls for six months upon an affirmative vote.
A truck driver stopped at the scene of an accident when struck from behind by a car driven by Edward Prenveille of Oakland. Several people including Mrs Previveille Sharon Prenveille and Norma Prenveille were taken to a local hospital for emergency treatment with minor injuries reported. A second incident involved Johnny Allen, 6, who was injured while fleeing a pursuing dog in a Huey Street area and treated by a family doctor.
Mrs Sallie White widow of William Allen White died in her sleep after a brief illness in Emporia Kansas She aided the Imporia Gazette with her husband and became co owner in 1944 after his death Her son Aventuo William L White continued the paper solo afterward
Residents heard Alameda County Sheriff HL Gleason outline proposals to create two district based civil defense committees. Volunteers invited across communication welfare firefighting warding utilities medical and welfare roles. Leaders named include Major Simkins retired US Army and assistants Adams and Joffe with Tony Garcia.
Hugh Ly Megas aged 65 dies suddenly from a heart attack while at work in Oakland. Funeral services are planned at Sorensen Brothers chapel in Me. Foust is survived by his widow Sadie Foust of Hazel Avenue, four sons, two daughters, and sixteen grandchildren.
United Press reports a widespread cold wave with downtown Miami at 41 degrees and suburban areas around 28. Chicago and Omaha show much colder readings while a southward air mass keeps temperatures depressed for days. The Weather Bureau links the chill to a mass of arctic air stretching from the Rockies to the Atlantic.
Federal grand jury charges Rep. Walter Brehm with seven counts for illegally receiving political contributions from two former office clerks Clara Soliday and Emma Craven. The indictment says $1380 was used to finance his reelection campaign. Brehm, 58, denies wrongdoing as his son James and staff respond.
In Okayama Japan a blaze tore through the dormitory of the Okayama Prefectural school for the deaf and blind. Sixteen children died and eighty others escaped as the fire swept the building.
