New DelhI UP I report Indira Gandhi announced unconditional surrender of Pakistani forces in East Pakistan proclaiming Bangla Desh a free nation. She announced a Western front cease-fire as a major tank battle raged, while Pakistan vowed to fight on.

Cuban exile freighter seized by Cuba after bloody high seas attack

A Cuban exile owned freighter crippled by fire from a Cuban gun boat was towed toward Cuba after a brutal sea attack. Captain Jose Villa, 15, pleaded for urgent Coast Guard help and described dead and wounded aboard the Johnny Express, a Bahama Lines vessel seized by Cuba. The ship, with 14 crew including two Americans, was towed about 118 miles north of Cuba toward Oriente Province amid claims of piracy, following the earlier seizure of the Lyla Express. Coast Guard medics were dispatched for humanitarian aid.

Frazier sentenced to death for five murders

Frazier received the gas chamber sentence after a four hour jury deliberation. He had previously been convicted of the murders of Dre Vielar Ohus Virginia Ohus their two sons Taggart and Derek and Dorothy Cadwallader at a hillside Santa Cruz area mansion on October 19 1970. Prosecutor Peter Chang called the crime a masterpiece of horror and declared Frazier a murderer rather than mentally ill. Bailiffs escorted him to jail after the verdict.

Committee urges junior high bid and bond date shift

A New Haven special committee urged the school board to award Cesar Chavez Junior High bids promptly, move the bond election to March 14, and endorse the school name. The unanimous group, convened by Supt. Duane Bay, met four hours to draft a conciliatory proposal to be presented next Tuesday. a Monday meeting will finalize it. The plan diverges from the board’s earlier stance on timing and naming.

Michigan lawmakers approve a $10,000 tax free grant for Charles Lee Clark, 72, who spent 30 years in prison for murder before a 1963 new trial proved his innocence. The aid, urged by Sen. Clark, native of Georgia, lives on $136 monthly welfare and has struggled to find work since his release.
