State officials assign Alameda County top priority among a dozen areas for a new state college. The Daily Review reports the recommendation will guide the next legislative session and state planning decisions.
Dense fog snarled Bay Area travel before dawn with a major auto carrier crash near Arroado causing power outages in Fremont and Hayward. Seven cars collided near Mission San Jose as visibility dropped to 150 feet. The San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge experienced the largest traffic jam in 20 years, halting trains buses and autos for up to an hour. Airports bases and naval sites faced closures while state education plans for Alameda County stirred debate.
Dr John Francis Riordan a 35 year old anesthetist at San Mateo Community Hospital was arrested after stepping from surgery in Belmont as the so called cat burglar of the suburb He admitted entering a home by forcing a rear door with a metal rod but fled when he heard the radio and found someone at home Officials offered few details on the burglary charge and Riordan cited overwork as a motive.
Newark Chamber of Commerce urged a state college for Southern Alameda county. Stanley Mazar was elected president, Jack Monahan vice president, Robert Lamp recording secretary, Joan Oliveira financial secretary, and Paul Gyffen treasurer. Directors: Louis Caldeira, Jack MacGregor, Ken Foster, Joseph Souza, Neil Sheffield, Harry Lewis, Edward O'Mara. The chamber approved ordering 5000 Saab maps at about $240 and donated $10 to the TB Christmas Seals campaign.
Eden Hospital directors and St Rose hospital fund raisers will request a joint meeting to clarify plans for a proposed 100 bed expansion. Richardson says a deferment or abandonment is at issue while a letter from St Rose campaign chairman De Bernardi urges resolution to avoid losing donations.
San Leandro moves to broaden its redevelopment plan to 314 acres valued at 28 million dollars. The proposal targets blighted downtown areas and seeks 314,600 dollars in federal funds, with a joint Urban Redevelopment committee and planning commission reviewing the interim general plan at city hall.
An 8 year old San Leandro man Manuel Vy Cordoza was found dead in his smoldering bed after a house fire at 14700 Washington Street. His son Arnold 44 attempted to enter the room but was overtaken by smoke. A separate blaze injured Charles Luttrell 30 of 290 West Avenue 44th who suffered extensive burns in a garage fire likely sparked by a gas fuelled mop near a hot water heater.
Two sailors arrested this morning on suspicion of stealing a wallet and car from a former USC student. In custody are John T. Guard, 18, of Alameda Naval Air Station, and James F. Sorrel, 21, AWOL from the USS Ortekassy at Hunters Point. Victim: Richard Heller, 27, of Richmond, 1953 president of Student Activities at USC and a U.S. Army Reserve second lieutenant.
In New Delhi Nehru estimated in Parliament that 25 000 Hungarians and 7 000 Soviet troops have been killed or injured amid the Hungarian revolution. He said there is no large scale fighting but passive resistance continues as India’s ambassador to Moscow reports conditions in Budapest resemble civil disobedience against colonial rule. Menon’s Budapest visit followed long talks with premier Janos Kadar.
Two southern Alameda County schools Palomares and Independent will receive extra Christmas vacation days. Most county schools close from December 19 and reopen January 2. San Leandro schools excepted. Russell Elementary closes December 20 to January 2.
Air Force races to locate 62 people aboard a Trans-Canada airliner missing along Vancouver area coast range mountains. Thirteen crews were ordered to Sea Island base near Vancouver as weather hampered the overn igh t effort. An aged man found injured near railroad tracks is not yet available for briefing. fog and clouds hindered the search.
The California Toll Bridge Authority ordered Public Works to prepare a bond contract for the Southern Crossing and tied financing to the Bay Bridge lower deck work. The decision shifts to the 1957 Legislature with terminal points listed as Army Street San Francisco and Bay Farm Island Alameda in earlier law, while the authority avoided naming terminals. Governor Knight voiced optimism about bond market conditions and potential 25 cent tolls to fund the project. Opponents say the issue is back before lawmakers for reconsideration.
