S J Marys College in Moraga will begin admitting women next September. Brother Me Anderson S C, president of the Christian Brothers school, said about 60 girls will enter the first year with plans to reach as many as 300 eventually. The college currently has 930 male students.
Menlo Park AP report says author David L Hoggan 46 was arrested after police say he struck his wife Luge Hoggan 49 on the head with a portable television set He faces felony wife beating resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon charges His wife was taken to Stanford Medical Center for treatment of injuries and shock after the incident following a call from their 16 year old daughter
Women from Chinatown accuse Hoi Ming Sewing Shop owner Hoi Ming Louie of eight months of unpaid wages totaling 7500. The San Francisco Human Rights Commission heard from workers who say fear kept them silent. IRS actions led to shop assets being seized. Workers reportedly earned about 70 cents an hour for 18 hour days, below the state minimum.
Carlos Lopez, 27, an escapee from San Francisco County jail, was found guilty by a San Mateo County jury of second degree murder and first degree robbery in the June 20 killing of 92-year-old retired sea captain Christian Pedesen in his Pacifica home. Pedesen's wife May, 75, was seriously injured. A second suspect, Clarence Galindo, 19, awaits trial January 5 on related charges. Lopez, Galindo and two others escaped June 17 but were recaptured.
The State Court of Appeal is asked to overturn convictions of Patricia Maginnis and Rowena Garber, two San Francisco women on probation after being found guilty of violating a state code that criminalizes writing about abortions. ACLU attorney Paul Halvonik argued the statute infringes free speech. the court took the case under submission with no ruling date.
San Francisco bridge directors approve restricting sidewalk pedestrian traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge to 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to curb demonstrations during heavy commuter hours. Recent protests slowed traffic as drivers stared at events, with open access previously from sunrise to sunset.
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover reported that the overall crime rate for the first nine months of 1969 rose modestly, eight percent, yet robberies and armed holdups jumped 15 to 18 percent. Street robberies led the increase, with residential holdups up 22 percent while bank holdups fell. Northeast cities showed slower rises than the West and North Central regions.

In Martinez, Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies investigated the disappearance of 16 year old Leana La Rell Roberts from her boyfriend Greg Vaio's Rodeo apartment. A neighbor reported a scream 13 minutes after Leana arrived, and witnesses described a man driving away in a station wagon. Police noted no immediate link to another missing teen, Elaine L. Davis, 17, from Walnut Creek.
An AP report from Honolulu notes a first grade child’s scrawled plea asking how to free Santa so gifts can arrive from the mainland. The Save Christmas Committee mailed copies to the Marine Firemen's Union in San Francisco and to President Nixon, urging ships with Hawaii-bound cargo be released to clear the backlog before Christmas.
