Girl Attacker Terrorizes Newark Bus. Driver Throws Keys
An 11 year old girl was attacked near Silva School as a Newark bus with 25 children approached. The driver Ruth Orta handed keys to a student to prevent the attacker from driving off. Children leaped from windows to escape, aided by two boys who fought the assailant. Richard Baguio Jr. was detained on suspicion of battery and attempted kidnapping after police arrived.

An explosion ruptured a large chlorine storage tank on the Mississippi River halting barge traffic for 30 miles. About 1000 Southern University students and nearby residents evacuated from dorms and homes. No deaths or injuries were reported.
