A fire broke out yesterday on the 17th floor of a skyscraper on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. No one was injured, and investigators are assessing the cause.
SAN FRANCISCO AP A Veterans Administration Hospital study shows patients with severe coronary artery disease who underwent coronary artery bypass surgery had a 96 percent survival rate over seven years, vs 63 percent for those treated without surgery. Dr. Ullyot states bypass can extend life in some subgroups while relieving chest pain.
A group of 10 San Lorenzo Homeowners Association members pressed HARD directors for more security at the park’s northwestern Golf Course corner. The board scheduled a special meeting with Hayward police Alameda County and other agencies to discuss actions including enhanced surveillance and restricted access.

The city council may have to roll back low income sewer relief after federal officials warned that continuing reduced charges for families earning 4600 or less could jeopardize nearly 1.6 million dollars in federal and state grants for a 1.28 million dollar sewage system upgrade. About 550 senior and low income residents would be affected.
