Doctors say most Vietnam GI casualties were noncombat related
A letter signed by four Army Medical Corps officers from Saigon’s 3rd Field Hospital and Long Binh’s 24th Evacuation Hospital urged an immediate U.S. withdrawal. They cited self-inflicted wounds, intra troop fighting, auto accidents, jungle diseases, and drug use as the primary medical issues, and questioned war profits influencing policy. Senator Mansfield cited the letter to push for a six month withdrawal target tied to prisoners’ release.

Costly weapons drive up price of shooting down planes
Washington IPI reports former Defense Department official Pierre Sprey testified before Senate Armed Services on spiraling costs of military hardware. He argued Sparrow missiles cost 2000 times as much per kill as WWII and Korea era guns, with lower effectiveness, and called for fixed funding per mission to spur smaller, cheaper weapons in greater numbers.
