Death Valley picnic needs a paid boss for decades
Hugh C. Telford, head of the Death Valley Encampment, runs a big volunteer event that pays him nothing and costs about $800 a year. The annual gathering, begun 22 years ago to honor the Jayhawker party, attracts tens of thousands, with about 27,000 expected this year. Once the event ends, volunteers gather at Furnace Creek to celebrate before Telford returns to his Studio City job.

Senior News Service reports Timberline Lodge on Mt Hood Oregon as a year round resort with winter ski season lasting through July. The timbered lodge features a 500 pound dining room door, fires in the lobby, and crowds up to 10 000 during peak Sundays. It offers three chairlifts three rope tows and SnoCats for access, summer skiing two miles above the lodge, a heated pool open year round, and hiking Timberline Trail. Built 1935 1997 via WPA CCC, the lodge uses native Oregon materials with handmade furnishings and local art.
