Fire destroys Mt Eden tavern with $20000 loss
Fire yesterday morning destroyed Gill's Club at 26537 Hesperian Blvd in Mt Eden area causing an estimated $20000 loss. Hayward firemen from Fairview Cheyenne and Gill stations battled the blaze as flames rose 30 to 40 feet. One fireman Ray Pratt was treated for a nail injury. Owner Gilbert Cook was away in Tennessee. a fire damage assessment and police investigation followed.

Foster Mother Dies After Caring For 52 Children
Castro Valley Mrs Anna Fritz Lester 68 of 5924 Castro Valley Blvd died at home after 32 years in Castro Valley and long service as a foster mother to 62 children. A former Austrian immigrant who ran a restaurant known as Mrs Fritz's Dining Place she dedicated her life to children after polio left her unable to walk.
