Three Survivors Rescued After Hawaiian Bomber Crash

A twin engine Navy patrol bomber with a crew of 10 crashed off Kauai last night. The U S S Bashaw picked up three survivors within two hours as ships and planes searched for more. One man was incoherent with a head bump and others reported possible additional survivors. The Neptune and seven submarines aided the rescue, with explosions and darkness delaying full details. Survivors were taken to Tripler Army Hospital for examination.

Defense Takes On Kirk To Fight Lab

Defense attorneys cross examined Dr Paul Kirk whose testimony tied Burton Abbott to Stephanie Bryans graveside. A 14 year old Oakland girl was held for investigation after she stabbed her mother Patricia Morgan 37 with a fish knife. Mrs Morgan was treated for two back wounds at Highland Hospital, condition listed as fair.

Three San Lorenzo Women Escape Trapped Auto

Three San Lorenzo housewives barely escaped a trapped automobile as a 70 car freight train crashed into it at Washington Avenue and the Southern Pacific tracks. Mrs Geraldine Mithompson, 34, told police she stopped on the tracks but could not back up due to traffic. two neighbors jumped free just before impact. No injuries were reported and the car suffered front-end damage.

Police Hike in Hayward Suggested

The National Safety council recommends Hayward increase its 40 man police force by about 60 percent adding roughly 24 officers to boost traffic safety. The report notes Hayward ranks mid pack among 467 cities in traffic safety and stresses funding and traffic conditions in evaluating expansions. The council advocates a traffic engineering unit and cites progress since 1954 in Hayward's traffic program while cautioning that economic limits shape any manpower decisions.

Four Pass State Bar Winners From South County

Four Southern Alameda county men Robert D. Dunivan Robert L. Hines Grant V. Rounseville and Eldridge Schlottman passed the California Bar Examination and join 466 others slated for admission ceremonies before the state Supreme Court. Dunivan 32 native of Elkhart Ind is staff training officer with Alameda County Probation office and plans to practice in Southern Alameda county. Rounseville 58 is an attorney from San Leandro with a long Bay Area record and will handle trial work with Irving Loube's Oakland firm. Schlottman a Hayward graduate and Army veteran works as office manager for Davis and Myer in San Francisco. Hines of Castro Valley and Schlottman reside with families in the area and all plan to remain local.

Legislature and Governor Faulted Over Water Plans

San Diego report says the California legislature and Governor were criticized as obstacles to funding state water projects. Robert T. Durbrow of the Irrigation Districts Association noted bills for state loans failed in Senate finance and vetoes blocked key site purchases. Henry Helsinger warned timely action is needed to avert a water shortage. Assemblyman Hansen urged state involvement in the San Luis dam site and pressed for federal partnership or immediate state control to aid northern to southern water transfers.

Goodman set a hearing date today for Daryl Chessman the so called red light bandit of Los Angeles to pursue a new bid to escape the San Quentin gas chamber Chessman appeared briefly outside San Quentin's death row for the first time in 30 years as his lawyers argued to delay proceedings while preparing a writ of habeas corpus Chessman known for many appeals that have halted executions listened intently and unsmilingly as counsel sought time.

Kiddy Park Opens For Yule Shoppers In Hayward

Mothers shopping for Christmas in Hayward can take their children to a free kiddy park at the Hayward Area Recreation District offices on 1015 E street. The center, sponsored by the Hayward Chamber of Commerce, operates until Christmas with hours 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
