Bay Area air board urged to curb pollution by citizens

Richmond Stop Smog Committee chair Katherine Lord led 10 pickets at a San Francisco Bay Area Air Pollution District board meeting. She accused officials of defending industrial polluters and ignoring the Legislature’s mandate while citing pollution from Standard Oil plants. John Maga of the Air Resources Board said 1974 auto smog devices would be 90 percent more effective than current systems.

Mineral King motion before 9th Circuit on fast track

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear a government motion Monday to speed a dispute that halted the $35.3 million Mineral King winter sports resort in Sequoia National Forest. The government seeks dissolution of a district court injunction that paused the Walt Disney Productions project after the Sierra Club obtained the injunction in August over lack of public hearings by the Agriculture and Interior departments.

Two Charged in Gem Swindle Case Indictments

Los Angeles AP report names mob figure John Battaglia and labor organizer Robert Tegay in county grand jury indictments over a $4.5 million gem swindle from a Tucson jeweler Newlan Pfeffer who died after a fall. Battaglia faces five counts of grand theft. Tegay accused of swindling a New York jewelry firm of $4,500. Bail set at $30,000 for Battaglia and $5,000 for Tegay. Battaglia currently imprisoned on a separate horse racing rigging conviction at McNeil Island.

Weekend classes not best for UC space use says Balderston

Fred E Balderston vice president for planning and analysis testified at an Assembly subcommittee hearing on California college space. He warned weekend and dinner hour scheduling limits part time work options and student activities and noted the UC system faced space constraints over the decade leading up to 1968.

135th homicide shocks San Francisco in 1869

Police identified Gerald Alexis, 25, fry cook, as San Francisco's 135th murder victim of 1869. His body was found in a pool of blood outside a Fillmore District social club after witnesses noted he had won money playing dominoes. A $1.64 bill was recovered. no arrest has been made.

Seaborg Calls Nuclear Treaty Key to World Disarmament

San Francisco, UPI. AEC chairman Dr Glenn T Seaborg says the nonproliferation treaty is the best chance for disarmament this decade. He foresees rapid ratification, with the pact in force next year once 18 more nations sign. France and China have not joined yet. Inspectors from the IAEA would expose violations, he adds, as more nations join.

Sentencing trial Chester Johnson grins at second murder details

In Los Angeles AP report Chester Allen Johnson, convicted in the murder of Sterling Siliphant's son, grinned as his former girlfriend Miss Phelps testified about an Oakland dentist begging for his life before Johnson shot him. She described Olsen being shot twice and dumped body, with Johnson later claiming amnesia. Miss Phelps and Johnson face further trial in Alameda County.

Bagley Pushes Tax Withholding Consensus

Sacramento AP reports Republican Assembly tax committee chair William T. Bagley of San Angelo says lawmakers seek agreement with Governor Reagan on income tax withholding and a broader tax reform package. A one day hearing opened on reform ideas for the 1970 ballot with further sessions planned in Los Angeles December 16–17. Bagley previously championed payroll withholding despite the governor’s opposition.

Kansas City Zoo Welcomes New Polar Cubs And Gorillas

Mrs. Jan Davis, Kansas City Zoo biologist, announces the latest arrivals. Polar bear cubs born Nov 29 are too small to have eyes open. A female gorilla born Nov 30 weighed 5 pounds 14 ounces and a male gorilla named The Colonel born Nov 16 weighed 4 pounds 9 ounces. The two gorillas are the fifth and sixth born at the Kansas City Zoo, with one other polar bear already born there.

Man Convicted of Manslaughter in Haight-Ashbury Death

A Superior Court jury convicted Darrell McKamey, 24, of voluntary manslaughter on Wednesday for the death of Stanley W. Delahanty in a Haight-Ashbury district case. The verdict follows testimony about the incident labeled as abuse in district records.
