Allied Dunkerque on East Coast Looms in Korea War
United Nations forces faced a potential Dunkerque retreat on Korea’s east coast as about 160,000 UN troops battled to hold lines while 250,000 to 300,000 Chinese and up to 150,000 North Korean fighters moved toward Pyongyang and Wonsan. Airlift plans were dropped due to weather, and U.S. Marine and 7th Division units isolated near the Chosun reservoir fought a fighting withdrawal while preparations to evacuate or burn facilities intensified.
