A pampered dog waited in the car on Mission Boulevard in Hayward while its owner shopped at Pay Less. The pet leaned out the window and balanced on the door sill for a better view of the owner’s return.
Hundreds of South Wates residents signed petitions and gathered at hearings to oppose American Recreation Centers plans for a seven acre Southgate site at Jackson Street Freeway and Calatoga Avenue. Opponents fear traffic, vandalism and blight while nearby residents facing the center welcome a development. The city council will resume debate next Tuesday to decide the project.
A student pilot Allen LaBelle 20 used a stolen twin engine plane from Long Beach Airport to menace the Los Angeles area. He buzzed Huntington Beach Catalina Island and a Navy ship, evading police with low passes and gunfire before surrendering at a Navy base. His girlfriend Marjorie 24 had urged him to seek religious salvation.
Oakland report states attorney James Larson argued Wendy Yoshimura, accused of harboring a bomb factory in a Berkeley garage, became Patricia Hearst’s roommate out of sympathy. He described Yoshimura’s reluctance to involve herself and fears of arrest, while prosecutors cited police testimony of explosives found in March 1972. Yoshimura faces four conspiracy and weapons counts amid a wider antiwar era case.
Yellow Cab Co suspended operations in Los Angeles San Francisco San Diego Oakland San Jose Oceanside and Phoenix citing unaffordable insurance. The shutdown idled about 1500 cabs and affected 490 drivers. Hayward franchise not impacted.
Vince Diamond, 23, of Fremont, topped a field of Elvis impersonators in a Union Square contest promoted by Elvis Now and a San Francisco radio station. He performs with Cruisin' in Livermore and Harlow's, wearing authentic 1950s style outfits and delivering hits like Jailhouse Rock and Hound Dog. Diamond learned guitar for the act after starting as a singer, saying the crowd response was wild at his first gig in San Leandro in 1973.
