Weather balloon mistaken for flying saucer over East Bay
Residents across East Oakland Hayward San Leandro and southern Alameda county reported a large silver object in the sky yesterday officials identified it as a king sized weather balloon named Moby Dick released from Vernalis near Tracy California by the Navy Air Station. The Air Force released the balloon which drifted toward the Pacific Ocean around 2 pm carrying 150 pounds of weather instruments and is designed to relay high altitude data to Cambridge Massachusetts. Similar balloons from Lowry Denver Colorado run seven to forty days at 40 000 to 85 000 feet and use a clock mechanism to puncture and land after data transmission.

Niles Woman Stabbed. Decoto Man Held On Attempted Murder
Deputy sheriffs held Jose M. Valdez, 22, of Decoto on attempted murder charges after an incident at the Texas cafe in Decoto. Mrs. Mary Rickman, 95, of Niles, was stabbed and treated for three wounds. Valdez also suffered a chest wound and was released after initial treatment. Rickman reportedly refused to sign a complaint against Valdez, and witnesses cited a prior acquaintance between them. Both were taken to Highland hospital for treatment.

Friden Strikers Return to Work Amid Deadlines

Oakland Man Charged In Hit Run Accident
