Arab States and Israel Near Fresh War Eskalation

United Press reports renewed hostilities with Egypt. Israeli air force intercepted an Egyptian flight over the Negev and forced it back to Egypt amid four days of border clashes. In Gaza, Israeli artillery pounded outposts as the mixed Armistice Commission halted proceedings for a cease fire. Four Egyptian and two Israeli soldiers were killed in a four hour exchange along the Gaza border. Security measures were set against possible refugee demonstrations.

Talks Open in London on Cyprus Crisis Plans

Delegates from Britain Greece and Turkey opened talks in London on Cyprus, where Greek Cypriots push for union with Greece. Foreign Secretary MacMillan aims a step by step home rule approach while affirming Cyprus will stay a crown colony until Greeks halt bloodshed. Security forces patrol main streets as discussions begin. 4000 troops stand ready and 700 pounds of arms were airlifted in from London. The conference may end in deadlock within a day amid rising Cypriot tensions and major questions of constitutional revision and sovereignty.

Rivers Trial Off Oakland Atom Heart Jewel in Nevada Case

The trial of Rivers and Hayward, self styled atomic sweetheart, continues in Oakland until September 21. Mrs Rivers has been ill. the delay follows a discussion between her attorney E McDonnell and the district attorney. She faces violations of the state corporate securities act and grand theft in the sale of Nevada uranium mine stock.

Castro Valley Picnic Attracts 2000 Residents

Castro Valley drew more than 2000 people to the Alameda County fairgrounds for the second annual community picnic. Bob McCluskey, co chair, said funds will support an unnamed project after a Sept 14 meeting to decide expenditures. Prizes, ice cream for 500 children, and entertainment by local groups filled the day with booths, games, and performances.

Pilot lands in pasture full of cows in San Leandro

Rodney E. Boone of Atherton escaped a forced landing after engine failure near the Oakland airport. He guided his Piper Tri-Pacer to a cow-filled pasture by the Davis street dump, keeping control despite brake loss. The plane, owned by Earl Parks of Menlo Park, was checked by local officials with Boone uninjured.

Hayward Prep to Set Tax Rate at 1.63

Hayward city council plans a special session at 4 p.m. to adopt a 1.63 tax rate the lowest in eight years. State Board of Equalization boosted Alameda County assessments, lifting total taxes despite a city rate drop. The Muir district will pay 1.60 while citywide assessed valuation rises by 10 million dollars. The rate would raise about 622,799 for the next fiscal year.

Niles Road Head On Crash Kills Sanilmo Espinoza

Sanilmo Espinoza 61 of Irvington dies in a three-car head on on Niles Highway near Decoto Road. A second fatal or injurious hit run and a third collision near Fairmont Hospital injure several. Hayward police investigate cause and witnesses report Espinoza was traveling on the wrong side. Funeral services planned at Berge Mortuary Irvington with Mass at St Joseph’s.

Indiana Oil Fire Slowly Burns Out in Whiting

About 2800 Whiting residents were allowed to return home as the multi million dollar oil refinery blaze slowly burned out. The 1660 acre Standard Oil plant remained idle while 125 nearby homes stayed off limits for further inspections. A state of emergency persisted with Guards and police patrolling to prevent looting. Three people died and 55 were injured, with 9 remaining hospitalized as operations planned to restart units in coming weeks.

Youth Fled San Leandro After High Speed Chase

A 19 year old Oakland youth, Robert J. Valente, fled San Leandro officers after a warning shot, facing ten traffic counts including speeding at 85 mph in a 25 zone and reckless driving. Valente abandoned the car on Halcyon drive, eluded deputies, and later surrendered to San Leandro police after officers traced the vehicle to John Dancer, who said he loaned it. Valente claimed fear as the reason for fleeing.

City Lines Filed on San Lorenzo incorporation efforts

Notices of intent to circulate incorporation petitions for San Lorenzo were refiled. The area includes San Lorenzo High School and the elementary school district offices. Petitions were filed at the county courthouse by Bay City Promoter Gerald D. Cochran.
