Susan Murphy and Diane Ellis, both 33, were arrested after FBI agents swept downtown Portland to catch the Manson cult related escapees. Murphy, a former roommate of Lynette Fromme and Sandra Good, faces charges of escaping from a federal prison by clubbing a guard. Ellis was serving an eight year term for bank robbery as the duo evaded authorities for 36 hours before being captured without resistance.
Brig. Gen. Edward T. Peters USMC Ret., 72, of Castro Valley, died yesterday at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Bar. Peters became a fixture in Castro Valley after arriving over 25 years ago, directing the Civil Defense in 1991 and guiding disaster preparedness across the county. He also served on local boards.
Fremont reports the Niles Flea Market will open at 8 a.m. Sunday with an Oklahoma Land Rush theme on Niles Boulevard. About 50 000 shoppers are expected as dozens of buyers and sellers bargain under early morning light, with publicist Betty Hannah enforcing the setup rule that no one may begin before 2 a.m. from her information booth.

New York report says insulin-producing islet cells from a three month old baby restored insulin production in Joanne Stoehr 25 of St Paul Minn. The breakthrough shown at a medical congress suggests a potential cure for diabetes though further work is required Dr John Najarian led the study noting seven patients in the initial trial with four successful animal precedents.
