Powell resists House bid to drop back pay claim

The House refused to rescind a $25,000 fine in exchange for dropping Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. from his $9,000 back pay claim. Powell’s lawyers offered to drop the claim if the fine was nullified, but House attorney Bruce Bromley argued Powell had no back pay due and that the House could seek $46,000 or more it says Powell misused. Powell maintains the back pay is for time he was illegally excluded from the 90th Congress.

Second Burglary At Church In San Leandro

Police investigate a second burglary at Holiness Church on Lewelling Boulevard. A 3825 movie projector was stolen between 2:30 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. Tuesday through an unlocked west side pastor's office window. Entry involved removing a screen and sliding window. The same access point was used in the week’s earlier break in.

Gunman Robs Service Station in Hayward

A masked gunman with a mustache and blond hair robbed the Standard Service Station at 24350 Hesperian Blvd in Hayward early yesterday. He demanded cash from the office safe and the outside box, took $49, and fled on foot down Hesperian after forcing operator Julian Hinojoza into a back room. The suspect wore a dark hat, coat, and glasses.

Manslaughter Trial Set for San Leandro Man in Hayward Crash

20 year old San Leandro resident Michael D. Moniz faces a manslaughter charge after a July 14 Hayward crash at Portsmouth Avenue and West Tennyson Road. Moniz, held to answer after a preliminary hearing in Hayward Municipal Court, will appear September 16 in Alameda County Superior Court. His passenger, Jerry S. Price, 19, Hayward, died the next day. the pickup truck driver, Wayne F. Kearns, 33, Hayward, died at hospital.

Girl Injured In Nimitz Freeway Accident Near San Clara

Linda Lee Lowry, 16, of Wash, was injured slightly in a Stinglecar crash on the Nimitz Freeway near the San Clara County line. She failed to negotiate a curve, veered off the road, rolled down the shoulder into a gully, and landed upright. She complained of a sore mouth and knee and shoulder pains but refused hospital treatment.

Woman Held In Shooting Incident Fremont

Mrs Maxine Costa 34 was arrested yesterday on a charge of assault with intent to kill after her husband Bernard 26 reported she fired four shots at him with a .22 pistol at their home 4469 Cahill St Fremont. He said bullets were fired inside the house and in the driveway as he fled. Costa was taken to Santa Rita with bail set at 20000.

Drugged youths dumped from moving car in Fremont

Police investigate after two youths were dumped from a moving vehicle yesterday in Fremont. One 7 year old was found under bushes near Oliviera School on Alder Street and taken to Washington Hospital. An 18 year old was found at Glenmoor Park and both boys were reported in fair condition at Fairmont Hospital. A drive is suspected in the two incidents as investigators search for the vehicle.
