Plan to Sell Brannanarm Plan Faces Congress Backlash

See Plan Sale Attempt Watch for dramatic move to sell Congress and public on Brannanarm Plan. It could involve wholesale dumping of surplus communities bought under present Support Price Law. With many families on relief and others with reduced incomes, erdat piles of spoiled food would cause plenty of howls. Agriculture Department ILIM has 16 million pounds of dried eggs bought last year to support prices. It’s offering them to foreign buyers at 60 percent of cost with no takers. Yes won’t keep forever. Department has bought another 56 million pounds this year with no signs of outlet. Poultry experts estimate they’ll have to buy then as Diany eggs next year if present law is continued. Also department has great stocks of potatoes that are rotting. Brannan wants to end our treat system of buying perishables to hold up prices to farmers. He argues foreign markets are gone and school lunch programs and Government institutions can’t begin to use up what we buy. He’d pay farmers the difference between crop prices and support price. Consumers would get their food for less. Brannan can’t prove the scheme would save taxpayers anything, but he’s expected to release “horrifying” guesses on costs if maintenance of present system continues with consumers getting no benefits. Brannan still hopes Congress will grant authority for a new direct-subsidy plan for perishables, despite House defeat. Senate agriculture committees are drafting its own bill.
