Budget rules out troop cut in Europe defense plan
The Nixon administration’s new defense budget rejects major cuts in European troop strength and aims to keep about 190,000 Army, 70,000 Air Force, and 45,000 Navy personnel stationed in Europe. A McGovern administration would seek deeper cuts in Europe, arguing redeployment capability and NATO alliance strength. U.S. generals oppose sizable pullbacks, stressing ground force presence as deterrent and rapid response if needed.
