Firefighters sought containment of a 5000 acre Mt Diablo blaze affecting brush and timber, with winds hindering efforts. No containment estimate given. weather conditions and shifting fronts drive progress as residents evacuate then return. California Department of Forestry officials and Sara Underwood noted uncertainty in timing as crews operate across three fronts.
Hayward City Council approved a 35 percent boost in monthly cable rates for Hayward Cable Television, Inc. from 7.40 to 10 dollars, with phased increases and funds set aside to connect about 800 homes. The vote was 6 to 2 and the plan includes possible future deregulation debates and market-based pricing.
In Sacramento the Assembly Transportation Committee subpanel voted 6 to 0 against Senate Bill 74 which would transfer toll setting from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission to the state Toll Bridge Authority. The vote clouded repeal hopes as MTC had raised tolls on the Dumbarton Hayward San Mateo and Oakland Bay bridges to 75 cents for casual riders and 60 cents for book holders. Sponsor John Holmdahl of Castro Valley said the fight isn’t over though the full committee will review next week. A small contingent from Castro Valley Fremont Union City and Newark traveled to testify and push for toll relief while local officials attended meetings amid travel and time costs.

A 17-year-old FreMont youth, David Boyce, is held in juvenile hall as prosecutors consider adult court. He faces three counts of murder with a firearm for the shootings that killed his sister Julia Anne and two others, and wounded Sharon Rogers who died later. A detention hearing and possible behavioral study will decide if he remains in juvenile court or is transferred.
After seven hours of bargaining and a freshman senator’s plea, Congress closed toward a compromise on auto emission revisions to avert a plant shutdown. Leaders expect quick final action before Friday’s August recess, sending the measure to the president in time to meet automakers’ deadline.
