Amethyst Limps Into Hong Kong
A battered sloop the Amethyst limped into Hong Kong harbor under heavy rain to a hero’s welcome. Thousands gathered as the 1480 ton ship, patched from Communist shell damage, sailed up the Yangtze after a siege. John Kerans and Liz Comer guided the vessel, crew under 20 endured cramped quarters and shell damage below decks. Ships of many nations saluted as the Jamaica escorted the sloop from the China Sea.
